The Largest Ship in the world in 2021

In the present building longer, bigger and heavier ships have become a trend and a competition between shipping Lines to show their power to the world. Normally we are used to comparing the ships by their appearances such as length overall and extreme breadth but also there are some other facts we could not see and to be considered. Some of them are Gross tonnage (volume of the vessel), Dead weight Tonnage (total mass of cargo that can carry with her summer load line at the water surface), Displacement (weight of the ship), and number of TEU (Twenty Equivalent Unit) which is specially used in container ships.

This seismic vessel was specially designed to survey mineral oils in the high seas and in the middle of the oceans. She was built by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries in Japan for PGS. These ships emit seismic waves to find minerals. They have specially designed microphones called Hydrophones to pick up the reflected signals and these hydrophones are connected to streamer winches (Cables). A streamer can extend up to more than eight Km. The purpose of having a wider stern is to tow as many streamers as possible. RAMFORM HYPERION is capable of towing 24 streamers at once.

This seismic vessel was specially designed to survey mineral oils in the high seas and in the middle of the oceans. In the present Queens Mary 2 is the only ocean liner in the world owned by Cunard Line. She was built by Chantiers de l’Atlantique in France. At the time she was launched in 2003 she was known as the longest passenger ship but later it was surpassed by the Freedom-class of Royal Caribbean International. It was specially designed to cross the Atlantic Ocean. But still, it remains the largest ocean liner that has ever been built.

The Allure of the Seas and Oasis of the Seas are twin sisters of the Oasis class. Both of them were made in the same shipyard in Finland. Oasis of the seas was the first to launch in her class in 2009 and it was the largest cruise ship at that time. Later in 2010, the record was broken by the Allure of the seas with a slight difference of 50 millimeters.

Harmony of seas is considered the second-largest cruise ship in the world. As the first two ships of the oasis class were a success royal Caribbean decided to add two more ships for the oasis class and the first to add was this. However, she is still the longest cruise ship in the world. She was also built by Chantiers de l’Atlantique in France. She can able to accommodate 5480 passengers at double occupancy of 6780 passengers.

Symphony of the seas is known as the largest cruise ship in the world by her gross tonnage. She is the fourth ship in the oasis class cruise ships and became the largest cruise ship by surpassing its own sister ship Harmony of the seas. This was built by Chantiers de l’Atlantique in France for the Royal Caribbean International. She can accommodate 5518 passengers and at double occupancy 6680 passengers maximum.

TI class of supertankers has four ships TI – Asia, TI – Oceania, TI – Africa, and TI Europe. These were built by Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering in South Korea. They were first built in 2002 and 2003 and later it was purchased by a Belgian shipowner Euronav. These were considered as Ultra Large Crude Oil Carriers (ULCC). These tankers were wider than the Panama Canal and also they can’t pass through the Suez Canal with full load cargo. Later they were converted into Floating Storage & Offloading (FSO) vessels because they weren’t able to contribute to global trading.

This is the world’s largest vessel by gross tonnage, breadth, and Deadweight tonnage. She was built by Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering in South Korea. She was launched in 2013 and start her offshore operations in 2016. This is owned by Allseas group in Switzerland and they have designed her to install and remove large oil and gas platforms and also replace heavy pipelines.

It is the world’s largest Liquid Natural Gas (LNG) powered vessel with a capacity of 23000 TEU. It was built by China State Shipping Cooperation for the French company CMA CGM. It was named after the founder of the company Jacques Saadé.

MSC Gülsün was considered the world’s largest container ship at the time it was launched in 2019. Later it was surpassed by HMM Algeciras. It was built in South Korea by Samsung heavy industries with cargo designs by Macgregor International AB for Mediterranean Shipping Company. This has a capacity of 23756 TEU and also she has 5 sister ships.

HMM Algeciras is considered as largest container ship in the world until 28th July 2021 before surpassing by the Ever Ace. It was built in South Korea by Daewoo shipbuilding company and it is operated by Hyundai Merchant Marine Co Ltd. She has the ability to carry 23964 TEU at once and that most numbers of TEUs make HMM ALGECIRAS one of the largest ships in the world.

This is the first Evergreen A-class container ship launched by the Taiwan company. Now it holds the record for the highest TEU capacity in a ship which is 23992 TEU. There are another 12 sister ships to come alongside her. But they are still manufacturing by Samsung Heavy Industries in Korea and China State Shipbuilding Corporation.


The above mentioned vessels are currently on their service but there are some Dead vessels (Ships which are no longer in their service) which were able to hold the record for largest ship in the world.

This was known as the world’s largest ship that was ever built at the time when she was launched in terms of Length, Breadth, Deadweight, Gross Tonnage, and Displacement. It was built by Sumitomo Heavy Industries in Japan and launched in 1976. Although she sailed around the world she couldn’t able to fit in English Channel, Suez Canal, and Panama Canal, and also in 1988, she was sunk during the Iran-Iraq civil war.

Because of these issues she had to serve under many owners in different names (Knock Nevis, Happy Giant, Jahre Viking and Mont). Later in 2010 she went her voyage to India and were sold to Indian Ship Breakers. But she still has record of “Greatest deadweight ever recorded and the longest ship ever built”.
